What a construction quote must contain

Most quotes that get rejected are not too expensive — they are impossible to check. A client who cannot see what they are paying for assumes the worst. A quote that wins reads like an audit trail:

• Identification — quote number, date, your company details and registration number, the client, and the site address. A quote without a number cannot be referred to later.
• One line per work item, grouped by section (earthworks, foundations, masonry, roof, joinery, plumbing, electrical, floors, finishes). Never a single "construction" line.
• Unit, quantity, unit price, line total on every line. This is the part clients actually check, and the part that protects you when the scope grows.
• Materials and labour shown separately. Labour typically runs 30–40% of materials; hiding it inside the unit price is what triggers the "why so expensive?" conversation.
• Subtotal, VAT, total including tax, then the deposit and the payment schedule.
• Validity date and lead time. Cement and steel move; a quote with no expiry is a promise you did not mean to make.
• What is NOT included — land, servicing, utility connections, permits, contingencies. Exclusions prevent more disputes than any other line.
• Space for the client's signature. An accepted quote is your contract.

Does it open in Excel?

Yes. It is a CSV file with a UTF-8 byte-order mark and semicolon separators, which is the combination Excel opens correctly on French and African locales. It also opens in LibreOffice, Google Sheets and mobile spreadsheet apps.

What percentage should I add for labour?

On the projects this engine costs, labour runs about 35% of the materials total, but it varies by trade and by city. Show it as its own line rather than folding it into unit prices — clients trust a quote they can take apart.

How do I avoid quoting too low?

Quantities are where money is lost, not unit prices: an underestimated wall area costs you the same margin twice, in materials and in labour. Measure off a plan rather than from memory, add a contingency line, and state your exclusions.
